ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., January 23, 2020—During the 2020 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo) at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International Inc. will present three free industry sessions:

  • Fan Energy Index (FEI) as a Rating Metric and Design Tool—ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1-2019, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, is the first standard, code, or regulation to use the new fan energy index (FEI) as the metric for efficiency provisions for commercial and industrial fans and blowers. On Monday, Feb. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Room W311H, AMCA Senior Director of Global Affairs Michael Ivanovich and AMCA Principal Engineer Tim Mathson will discuss how to use FEI to meet ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1-2019 provisions for variable-air-volume and constant-volume systems.
  • Minimizing Fan-System Effect—System effect, the result of less-than-ideal conditions at the inlet or outlet of a fan, adversely affects fan performance, reducing service life, increasing noise and vibration, and wasting energy and budget. On Monday, Feb. 3, from 1-2 p.m. in Room W312AB, David Maletich of the AMCA DOE System Efficiency Task Force will share how to recognize and minimize system effect by ensuring air enters or leaves a fan uniformly, presenting real-world cases.
  • Remote Periodic Testing of Life-Safety Dampers—With the 2019 editions of NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, and NFPA 105, Standard for Smoke Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives, came the allowance for remote periodic testing of smoke and combination fire/smoke dampers. On Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Room W311B, Dane Carey, chair of the AMCA Damper Engineering Committee, and Kent Maune of the AMCA Fire and Smoke Damper Subcommittee will discuss how this can mean significantly reduced costs and increased safety.
Each of these entry-level courses is worth one professional-development hour (PDH) through Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP).
