ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., January 19, 2022—Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International, Inc. announces the publication of a revised standard, ANSI/AMCA Standard 250-22, (Laboratory Methods of Testing Jet Fans for Performance replacing AMCA 250-12).

This standard establishes uniform methods for laboratory testing of jet fans to be installed in, but not limited to, road/rail/mining tunnels and carpark garage applications.

This standard deals with the determination of technical characteristics needed to verify manufacturing of the specified performance characteristics of jet fans for longitudinal applications (e.g., thrust and airflow). It does not cover those fans designed for ducted applications, nor those designed solely for air circulation (e.g., ceiling fans and table fans).

The test procedures described in this standard relate to laboratory conditions only. The measurement of performance under in-situ conditions is not part of this standard.

Key points addressed in this new standard include:

  • The Purpose and Scope were updated to ensure that this standard applies to testing of all Jet fans and not only Tunnel Jet Fans, permitting this standard to be used for other applications such as car parks.
  • Modifications of definitions and variables to ensure those utilized in this standard were referenced and conformed to other AMCA standards.
  • The measurements section was clarified to be based on thrust and other variables were calculated.
  • Additional measurement standards were left in, but it is noted that any obstruction or inclusion of additional apparatus to measure flow will negatively impact the actual thrust development of the product.
  • Thrust, sound, and vibration test procedures and figures were reviewed and updated to allow easier comprehension and cohesion with other AMCA standards. The ability of other manufacturers to implement these changes was confirmed.
  • The requirements for input power and efficiency/efficacy were reviewed and confirmed.
  • The presentation of the results section was reviewed and updated.

AMCA and its technical review committee are confident that the changes in the standard match the most recent developments in the Jet fan industry.
