Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

To ensure the health and safety of the AMCA staff — our headquarters colleagues will be working remotely through at least March 27. As always, they will be available through email and phone.

With the physical setup of the AMCA laboratory lending itself to "social distancing," members of the AMCA laboratory team have requested that they be permitted to maintain operations. AMCA senior leadership has decided to honor this request and will continually monitor the situation, ensuring the team's safety is maintained.

Senior staff is reviewing these decisions regularly and we will alert you should anything change.

Thank you for your understanding. Stay healthy!

Supporting the transition to FEI from FEG

  • Model energy codes and standards
  • USA state energy codes
  • Metric version under development

New fan-efficiency metrics developed by AMCA International—fan energy index (FEI) and fan electrical power (FEP)—can be used to right-size fans and reduce power consumption in commercial and industrial air systems. Stay tuned to be able to search FEI rated fans and use our FEI calculation tool on our website.

AMCA Standards:

Model Codes & Standards:

ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1: Addendum ao to ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, which contains FEI requirements proposed for Standard 90.1, is nearing completion and is expected to be considered for publication by ASHRAE in June. .

International Energy Conservation Code (IECC): Based on ASHRAE 90.1 Addendum ao, proposals to replace FEG language with FEI language were submitted by ASHRAE (CE139) and AMCA (CE137 and CE138) to the International Code Council for the next edition of the IECC for consideration at the screening committee hearings in Albuquerque in May 2019. AMCA will withdraw its proposals to support ASHRAE’s. Note: all FEI-related proposals can be found on PDF pages 1338—1346 of the Committee Action Hearing monograph posted on the ICC website here. California Title 20 is part of the Appliance Efficiency Regulation and California Code of Regulations. It is administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). The CEC initiated a Title 20 rulemaking for commercial and industrial fans and blowers in 2017. The public docket has all documents published by the CEC relating to the regulation, and all comments, proposals, and supplemental materials posted by stakeholders.

U.S. Department of Energy

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy began a rulemaking process with the intent to develop test/labeling and energy-efficiency standards for commercial and industrial fans, an initiative that was put on hold in 2017. Useful materials from the initiative are the Appliance Standards and Rulemaking Federal Advisory Committee Term Sheet, which documents consensus-voted recommendations toward the development of regulations, and the third Notice of Data Availability, a provisional analysis of economic impacts and energy savings that could result from promulgating a regulatory energy conservation standard for commercial and industrial fans and blowers.
